Moving is great joy

It looks like I scheduled things a little too tight this time.

The movers are here and here is the truck. Don't worry that's my car blocked in.

Move starts

The moving guy came by yesterday and took the less than 500 pounds of stuff I'm allowed to take to Honduras. Since they have most of the things I need already there, I shipped some clothes and my desktop computer. I probably didn't need to ship the computer, since I will have my laptop with me, but I'll be there a year and they allow it.

Today the main movers come to take the rest of my stuff away to storage. I think they will arive within the next hour. I don't own any large, heavy, expensive furniture, so hopefully this won't drag into tomorrow. I have some outprocessing to take care of at work and would like to get it done early.

I'm going to take a couple days to get the apartment nice and clean to turn over to the manager on Tuesday, then I drive to Oakland to drop of my car for storage. I've never stored a car before, so this is adding a bit to the stress.

Wednesday morning I get on a plane and eventually stop in Detroit, where I will spend a little more than a week with family. The logistics behind this are a little stressful as well -- I'm having trouble finding a ride to the airport. I'll be staying on base, my car will already be in storage, and the base is more than an hour away from the airport. I have to leave at 3:30 a.m., and no shutles run that early. A cab will cost $120. I tried a car service who advertised $85 on their Web site, but they quoted me $195 because of the early pickup. I still have a few more days to work this out, but it looks like I may be taking a cab.

Christmas in NorCal

The houses in a subdivision near my home have a tradition of being the most over-the-top neighborhood in the area when it comes to Christmas decorations. Many of the houses have gone with a cartoon theme, but the strange thing is, they aren't from holiday movies.

Here's an example below. I just don't see the connection between Charlotte's Web and the holiday season.

What's Hot for Halloween

Next to Hannah Montana, this year's hot Halloween costume has to be the plus-sized ninja. And that's all I have to say about that.

For those on the other side of the ninja/pirate conflict, there is also a plus-sized pirate.

Awards which have eluded Al Gore

Al Gore now holds an Oscar, an Emmy and the Nobel Peace Prize, but there are a few major awards which the former vice president probably will not win:

1. The Heisman Trophy
2. Olympic Gold Medal in Figure Skating
3. Miss Teen USA
4. Blue Ribbon Cabbage at the Alaska State Fair
5. A Saturn Award (Editorial comment: He should be honored with one)

He still has a good shot at a Tony, a Grammy, an MTV Video Music Award, and The Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year.

Cool and Nearly Useless Things: Sun Jar

I stumbled across this cool and nearly useless thing a few days ago. This jar has a solar cell built into the top, which charges the light during the day. At dark, the jar glows like it captured the sun during the day. A UK company designed and sells this item for 20 Pounds (If you're not a Brit, you'll have to use a currency converter to figure how much it will cost you.)

Forgotten 80s -- Expose

I'm not really sure why I think of the girl group Expose when I look back on the 80s. I don't really know much about the group other than the videos (from when MTV showed non-stop videos). Just in case you don't remember Expose, here's a video to refresh your memory.
